Summit Chair

Describe yourself in three words please!

InnovativeFriendly, Maternal

Can you give a short introduction to your role and organisation?

As part of UK Research and Innovation, Innovate UK stimulates productivity and economic growth by supporting businesses to develop and realise the potential of new ideas, including those from the UK’s world-class research base.  As Director of AI and Data Economy at Innovate UK, I lead a team of experts working to identify, support and accelerate high growth-potential innovation in the UK, based on cutting-edge AI and data research and technology.

Are there any specific themes / topics that you would like to see included in the summit agenda?

Risk appetite for innovation among public sector bodies and ways to share risk more effectively.

What would you say is your greatest success story to date?

In my working life, I am happy to say that I’ve put in place grant funding programmes, with colleagues, that have played a major role in the growth of many companies.  Achieving a PhD alongside a full-time job is also a personal success.

If there was one specific AI challenge that you could overcome, what would it be?

Awareness: A more widespread appreciation of what AI can and cannot achieve (and that it is a whole range of techniques and approaches that have their own pros and cons) would help encourage sustainable investment in the areas most likely to benefit.
